UC Davis
CPB STUDENT WORKSHOP: METABOLIC THEORY OF ECOLOGY
UC DAVIS CAMPUS
MAY 27 - MAY 29
sponsored by the
Center for Population Biology
CPB Workshop Schedule
Jim Brown and his colleagues have developed a research program that uses the unifying factor of metabolic rate, as affected by body size and temperature, to inform topics as varied as species diversity gradients, population dynamics, life history evolution, and control of ecosystem processes. We are pleased to have Jim at Davis for a series of lectures over the course of three days during which he will introduce MTE and present some of his latest work. We will field requests to meet with Jim at a later date
Tuesday, May 27
10:00 AM 1022 LSA Jim Brown "Introduction to a
metabolic theory of ecology"
Wednesday, May 28
The workshop will focus on gradients of species diversity; Jim will present his latest work on this topic, and Susan Harrison has graciously agreed to present some of her work on this topic as well. These lectures will be followed in the afternoon by a roundtable discussion with Jim and Susan on hypotheses for species diversity gradients.
10:00 AM 1022 LSA Jim Brown "Metabolism and
species diversity: roles of productivity and kinetics"
10:45 AM 1022 LSA Susan Harrison "Niche
conservatism, an alternative explanation for productivity-diversity
relationships?"
5:00 PM 2342 Storer Panmixer
Thursday, May 29
10:00 AM 1022 LSA Jim Brown "Where next with
metabolic theory?"
12:00 PM Grad student lunch
Hope to see you there,
