The EEG program consists of academic year and summer components.

  •  Fall
  • Applications to the EEG program will open in mid-October annually, with a deadline of mid-November. Applicants will be notified of their status, including match with a research mentor, by 1 December.
  • Spring
  • EEG Program scholars and their UC Davis mentors will meet monthly beginning in March via video conference calls that include the UC Davis faculty member, the scholar, and if appropriate, a Howard University faculty co-mentor. UC Davis mentors will provide background information about scholars’ research projects, introduce them to the scientific questions that they will investigate during summer research, and ensure that scholars are well prepared through coursework and readings before they come to UC Davis. This pre-program onboarding includes aligning expectations and developing a written description of the research project with benchmarks for both scholar and mentor.

In late May, scholars will participate in a virtual coding bootcamp. This workshop will introduce EEG Program scholars to fundamental coding skills required for summer research, such as the unix command line, data input and data file manipulation, and running command-line genomics tools. The workshop will meet over two weeks in five two-hour sessions, with the expectation of 20 hours spent in completing assignments.

  • Summer Research and Professional Development
  • EEG Scholars will conduct research with a UC Davis faculty member, with day-to-day mentoring by a postdoctoral researchers or senior graduate student. Research will begin in late June and end in mid-August with a research symposium including scholars from other UC Davis summer research programs.

In addition, weekly professional development seminars, held with scholars from other immersive research programs, will include workshops on writing, preparation for graduate school applications, careers in environmental biology, and responsible conduct of research. As part of this series, scholars also hear research presentations by faculty and advanced graduate students.

Scholars also can elect to join optional professional development programs: a workshop to learn the R-scripting language, a science communication workshop led by UC Davis Media Relations professionals, and the Ecology-Evolution Graduate Preview Program, which is a virtual graduate school application workshop designed and presented by UC Davis graduate students.

Logistics

UC Davis will arrange round trip transportation from EGG Program scholars’ homes to UC Davis.

EEG scholars will stay at campus residence halls co-located with scholars from other summer research programs. Housing includes a meal plan and access to UC Davis recreational facilities. We will also provide each student with a bicycle to facilitate local transportation and enhance the Davis experience.

All EEG scholars will receive a stipend of $xxxxx, paid in installments beginning after the coding bootcamp.
